- <p> DIED. Robert Penn Warren, 84, the only American writer to
- win Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and poetry and the first
- U.S. poet laureate; in Stratton, Vt. Warren's writings were
- deeply rooted in his native South. His 1946 novel All the King's
- Men, based on Louisiana's legendary populist Governor Huey Long,
- became an Academy Award-winning film. Warren was one of the
- first to win a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant." In 1980 he
- was given the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian
- award.
